John 21:15-17 (NIV)
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.
When Jesus asked Peter if he loved him Peter was hurt because he had asked him three times. What would be the one thing Peter could do to demonstrate his love for Christ? We see it in the text in front of us. Peter would demonstrate his love for Christ by feeding and caring for his sheep. For those who have been called to be leaders in the church, it appears that our primary task to accomplish is to feed the church of God well.
Those who are called to teach and preach are to demonstrate their love for Christ by giving themselves to studying and praying and preaching so that the people of God will be well fed.
They are to see to it that the sheep are cared for. It will not be their primary task but it will fall on them to see to it that it gets done.
So if you want to know if a spiritual leader of the church loves God take a good look at how they spend their time. Are they involved in studying and praying so they will be able to teach the Word of God to those who belong to God so they will be encouraged to love Christ more?
If you have leaders in your church that have committed their lives to study and pray and teach the Word of God express your gratitude to God.
Thanking God for those who set the example for this pastor to follow years ago.
