December 20, 2018: A Look into the Future

Isaiah 9:1-2 (NIV)
1  Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan–
2  The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.

Are you walking in darkness?  Is your life filled with despair and gloom?  It is often during this holiday season that those who are prone to depression experience it most acutely.  The enemy reminds you of all the ways you have messed up.  The memories cause the waves of fear and depression to rise before you know it, the waters are over your head and you feel that you cannot go on one more step, for one more moment.

Judgment for your sins now looms large on the horizon. There is nothing you can do about it.  Everything you have attempted to cast off the depression and doubt only intensifies your inability to rescue yourself.  One wave after another of despair, doubt, and remorse wash over your soul.  You are sinking for the last time.

As you descend into the dark abode of everlasting fear and torment, you hear a faint echo.  “Nevertheless!”  You hear it again.  This time it is louder, more distinct.  Then again, this word rises in volume over the noise of the waves of doubt and despair.  “Nevertheless!”

What does this word mean?  As you begin to think on the word you are now hearing louder and clearer with each breath that you take you do not even realize it but you are no longer sinking but you are being lifted up from the pit.  You cannot feel it yet but something is happening to you that has never happened before.  There is a lighter sense in your soul.  The foreboding darkness you have been in for so long is now giving way to light you have never known.

The word falls on your ears once more, “Nevertheless!”  Darkness is giving way to light, the heavy despair you felt for too long is now being taken over by joy.  O you have had fleeting moments of joy before, but they never lasted, they only left you with more oppressive feelings of doubt because you could not sustain such feelings.

This joy is different.  It is brighter and lighter.  Something is happening in your soul but just what you cannot say, you try to describe it to yourself, words fail.  Something miraculous is happening, but just what you have no idea.

Stay tuned as we witness the transformation of a soul once in bondage to fear and despair being set free.

See you tomorrow.
