October 3, 2019: Setting Your affections on God

Colossians 3:1-4 (KJV)
1  If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2  Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3  For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4  When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

I was talking with a friend just the other day and the question came up, “How can I keep from being enticed by the world so often?”

This is a great question we all need to ask.  The world we live in is fallen, and everywhere you look you see the result of sin and rebellion.  How is a child of God to live so their heart’s affections will be set on Christ?

This act of setting your affections on Christ is something you have to do; it is not something that God will do for you.  We are called to seek the things which are above.  Jesus says as much in Matthew 6:19-21 “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

The secret in setting your affections on things above is in investing in such behaviors that will cause your heart to be turned in that direction.  How do we lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven?  The answer is in making regular deposits in the storehouses of heaven.  We do this through time spent in intercession for others to come to Christ, by investing in time reading and meditating on God’s Word, by taking special time aside in fasting and prayer so we can focus more completely on Christ and his Word.

Read over the following Scriptures and ask God to make the cry of the psalmist of yours as well.  Psalms 42:1-2; Psalms 63:1-3; Psalms 73:25-27.

As you prepare to invest in time set aside in the upcoming prayer and fasting observance may the Lord direct your hear to find your growing satisfaction in Him.
