April 6, 2020: Stop Being Afraid!

 Proverbs 3:21-26 (NIV)
21  My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight;
22  they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
23  Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble;
24  when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
25  Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
26  for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.

We are living amid a very fearful time. Alcohol and gun sales are through the roof during this current crisis.  People doing all sorts of crazy things to try to protect themselves.  Fear is riding high in our lives and our world presently.  Is there anything we can do to put fear to flight and replace it with peace and contentment?

The writer of Proverbs gave his son some very sound advice. He was told to preserve sound judgment and discernment.  He was not to let these two counselors out of his sight.

How can a person keep sound judgment and discernment always before him?  You cannot go around reading a book in front of you constantly.  You would probably have lots of accidents, and you would look rather foolish.  God does not want you to look foolish unnecessarily.

If you cannot hold a book open in front of you is there another way you can always have sound judgment in front of you ? You already know the answer.  If you meditate on the Scripture and seek to hide its words in your heart and mind, then God’s Word will be in front of you at all times.  God can bring up the part of His Word you need at the right time to make the right decision.

You might be saying you don’t have time to meditate or memorize His Word.  You.  If you took fifteen minutes every day to read the Bible, you would finish reading it in one year.  If you spent just one hour a day reading the Bible you would read through it in just seventy days.  At this pace you could read through the Bible five times a year.

Reading the Bible five times a year over the course of your lie you would have the entire message of the Bible firmly inscribed in your heart and mind n just a few short years.  Consider the results of doing this that are mentioned in our passage for today.

  1. They will be life for you.
  2. You will go on your way in safety
  3. Your foot will not stumble
  4. When you go to sleep you will not be afraid
  5. Your sleep will be sweet
  6. Yu will have no fear of sudden disaster
  7. The Lord will be your confidence
  8. Your foot will not be ensnared

The physical and mental health benefits alone are worth the discipline and time it will take to think on God and His Word. Remember God knows what you most need and he always commands you to do what you most need.

Now go grab your Bible and let God’s Word come alive in your soul.
